Samson (サムソン Samuson) is a character from the manga series, Wild Hunt and is one of the major protagonists of the series. Samson is a powerful warrior who specializes in hand to hand combat and weapon wielding, with his signature weapon being the lance. He supplements these skills with the empowered necklace he was given from his late lover, Kokoro, which can transform into any weapon he wishes. Originally starting off with a great hatred for yokai due to his tragic past, his experiences with Gilgamesh and other kindly yokai gradually changed his mind of yokai in general, and he soon became a powerful and reliable friend for Gilgamesh's group.

Among the many warriors throughout the world, Samson is considered to be one of the best, due to his inhuman strength and his knowledge and skill with martial arts and weapons.

Fighting Style[]

Resulting from his childhood years of striving to be a great warrior and his adulthood becoming consumed with hatred for yokai, Samson found himself taking his understanding of hand to hand combat and applying it as a means to efficiently destroy any yokai he came across. Believing it takes a monster to kill a monster, Samson carefully observed the behaviors and fighting abilities of the many yokai he slayed throughout the years until he could imitate their mannerisms in combat as well. This would go on to become the varied forms of martial arts Samson would reveal throughout Wild Hunt. In time, as Samson continued to fight stronger foes, his prowess in unarmed combat grew. Samson has become proficient enough in martial arts that he can swap in and out of different combat stances without leaving himself vulnerable to most enemy attacks, as well as learning to adapt his self-taught martial arts to a particular foe that may be able to counter one or more of his yokai-inspired fighting styles.

Below lists the currently known combat forms Samson will take on when fighting unarmed.

Grave Dancing[]

Inspired by the movement and behavior of zombies, Samson will allow his head, shoulders, arms, wrists and hands to go limp as he imitates the teetering yet focused motion of a reanimated corpse. With a sluggish and purposeful pace, Samson will at times raise his hands and arms in an attempt to feign a swipe or grab at his opponent, all while paying careful attention to his surroundings despite his unfocused head posture. In short, while looking the part of a simple-minded and aimless zombie, Samson is constantly analyzing his opponent and surroundings and reacting to them accordingly. This is because of the true purpose of Grave Dancing, which is to focus on parries and counters against enemy assaults. To ensure some success, Samson takes on the behavior of a seemingly weak zombie with no obvious fighting stance to offer protection, which can provoke certain foes into attacking him. As Samson is always keeping a mindful eye on the actions of others while in this stance, he can respond with the appropriate counterattack necessary to both survive the incoming attack and land a blow against the opponent. When he isn't able to take the offensive, Samson can use his awareness of the situation to parry and avoid the attack instead.

When going in for a counterattack, Samson's demeanor changes for a short few seconds. His normally limp body will tighten as his muscles swell with strength, and his zombie facade will quickly disappear as Samson goes in for a brutal direct strike with his fists, feet, knees, head or whatever else comes to mind. Afterward, Samson will attempt to regain his composure and behave like a zombie again. Usually, opponents who grow wise of Samson's sneak attacks will attempt to approach him more carefully or use more indirect methods of attack afterward. Despite this setback, and with enough resolve, Samson can continue to use Grave Dancing to his benefit throughout the remainder of a fight. Due to its reactive nature, Grave Dancing is best used when Samson goes on the defensive in a fight, such as when he may need to stall for time or when he is unable to defeat a foe with brute strength alone.

In regards to setbacks, Grave Dancing has a fair few weaknesses going against it. One being that once the element of surprise is gone, it becomes harder to defeat an opponent with Grave Dancing alone, especially if the fight becomes dragged out over time, as the enemy may learn and adapt to this fighting style. Another disadvantage to Grave Dancing is in its heavy focus on countering opponents. Due to relying on what an enemy combatant does or doesn't do, Grave Dancing lacks much in terms of direct offensive attacks. The only opportunity to land a blow on an opponent is when they come within range of Samson and leave themselves open during an attack of their own. Without that, Samson is left slowly shambling and waiting for someone else to make the first move. Therefore, Grave Dancing succeeds or fails entirely based on what happens around Samson, as opposed to making use of Samson's own strengths. However, this can thankfully be fixed by Samson's ability to switch between fighting styles in the midst of a fight, or switching to the use of weapons instead.

Despite its flaws, Samson has proudly referred to Grave Dancing as a martial art that represents "persistence." Most likely referring to the inhuman determination seen in zombie hordes, no matter how much resistance they face, though it could also be referring to Samson's own personal perseverance in waiting for his chance to strike back at his foe. The name itself, Grave Dancing, seems to be in reference to the zombies it's inspired from, but also the swaying, rocking motions of Samson's body when using it. Motions that could be mistaken as a sort of clumsy, informal dance. Alternatively, it could also be a play on the phrase, "dance on your grave," which is a spiteful way of saying someone will celebrate another person's demise.

Trivia[]

  • Samson's name was inspired by a man known as Samson in the Old Testament's Book of Judges. The Bible's Samson was an Israelite who was granted superhuman strength to help protect his people from the neighboring Philistines, on the grounds that he never cut his hair.
