Leo Umbral (本影 レオ Honei Reo) is a main character of the manga series, Wild Hunt and acts as the arch-rival of main protagonist, Gilgamesh Prime. Leo is one of the cat sith, a class of fairies who've taken on the appearance and characteristics of felines. Despite how he was born, Leo can be seen taking on the appearance of a human or other life-form throughout the series to protect himself from his yokai sensitivity to essentia, among other reasons.

Leo is a crafty, mysterious and powerful individual in Wild Hunt, who seems to become the second most powerful member of the main cast by the end of the series; only ever truly outdone by Gilgamesh. Due to their similar ambitions to become a god and because of their conflicting natures, Leo sees Gilgamesh as a worthy rival to the throne of godhood, and ultimately seeks to beat him to it. As a result, the two share a close and intense relationship with one another.

Currently for as of yet explained reasons, Leo is known as the King of the Cats (猫の王 Neko no Ō.)

Trivia[]

  • Leo takes his first name from the Latin word for lion, which makes reference to his cat sith heritage and his title as King of the Cats. It may also refer to the Leo constellation and its association with the sun in astrology, if one connects his first name with his last name.
    • Umbral is derived from the root word, "umbra," which itself can refer to a shadow or the central region of a sunspot. This seems to make some connections to the nocturnal behavior of cats and perhaps even Leo's name's basis in astrology, if one were to connect his surname's solar reference to his given name's reference to the Leo constellation.
  • Wyvern 0m3g4 has expressed at least on one occasion that he originally wanted a cool, appealing rival character for Wild Hunt, who could test Gilgamesh. He would later find a good reason to justify Leo's inclusion in the story by stating his relationship with Gilgamesh is that of mutual growth and understanding. As the two compete for the same goal, they develop and learn from one another. Therefore, while Leo in turn grows as a character thanks to Gil's influence, he too also imparts some values and lessons into the protagonist.
